Meet The Misfit

Why Misfit?

I am the one that usually doesn't fit in, and that's usually because I am always one the one that most people over look.

I use a variety of mobility devices. So most over look me thinking that because I am disabled I am somehow less.

Others overlook me because I dress for me and I dress for comfort. So I can be in something bright cheery one day, black the next, and suddenly sporting a my little pony shirt.

But at least by being over looked means, I am lucky enough to be intentional about who comes into my life.

I love openly, loudly and unconditionally. I accept people for who they are and where they are. Not for who I think they should be.

My faith, didn't start in the church and I think I am better for it.

In fact, the church didn't want me and they made that clear. In the 1980-1990s the church was not a friendly place for disabled people.

Many of us were told, that people didn't want to see disabled people at church.

But they were the people that cornered us in public as we went about doing life because they had to pray away the cripple. Then they could say they prayed for a cure and their work was done.

Yeah.

Thanks but no thanks.

Instead God found me in other places.

The forest.

Volunteering in the soup kitchen, group homes,  & homeless shelters.

In the people that embraced me disability and all.

Jesus, loved first and cured second.

Disabled people don't need a cure, they need acceptance. They need unconditional love.

They need to be seen as the human beings that they are. With a place in the world, creation, and in God's kingdom.

I have a love for videogames, books, writing, peanut butter (and chocolate) and caffeine.

I am a theology student, leader in the church who is passionate about a fresh, accessible, inclusive, vibrant church. Where everybody has a place. Even when  church, isn't typical.

I don't think church should look the same for everyone because we all have different needs, different lives, schedules, and lets face it,  church is more than just a butt in a pew on Sunday morning.

Faith and Spoons has something for everyone, whether you grew up in the church, you're church curious, spiritual or just seeking. Whatever umbrella you fall under, you are welcome here.  Grab a mug of your favourite beverage and get comfortable. Dig in.
